30 weeks pregnant

30 weeks feels like a milestone. 10 weeks left – a nice finite number. I feel like I’m finally settling into pregnancy and have started thinking about the birth. I’ve always had an idea of the kind of birth I’d like (natural and no intervention) but now I’m thinking about the mechanics of how to achieve that. I’m reading The Gentle Birth Method, as recommended by a friend who had a positive labour. It’s sort of hypnobirthing but with a good helping of yoga, nutrition and massage on the side. After my first prenatal yoga session last Saturday I can safely say I am a convert. I told the rather lovely teacher the problems I’ve been having (achy hips and sleepless nights) and we worked on ways of solving them through gentle stretches and breathing exercises. It worked, hooray! I’m practising deep relaxation (some might call this hypnosis but I am still too cynical for that) and it turns out Matt is a willing and accomplished masseur. I am one lucky lady. The only bit I’m not so sure about is the strict wheat and sugar free diet. Cake has been an understanding and loyal friend throughout this pregnancy business. Can I turn my back on it now? Doubtful but I’ll try. I’m not expecting miracles and have been fully briefed on all the out-of-your-control things that can happen once you hit the labour ward, but at least I will know I tried. If labour is a marathon then let the training begin. RAH (or something more zen).

  1. Look at your cute bump! I found Tara Lee's Pregnancy Yoga DVD really helpful http://www.taraleeyoga.com/shoponline.php. The breathing definitely came in handy during labour.

    p.s don't give up cake ;)

  3. Thanks for the recommendation Josie, was thinking I'd like a yoga DVD for use at home. And yes, don't think I'll be giving up the cake. I literally can't stop thinking about it.

  5. I'm a total fan of pregnancy yoga and the relaxation breathing got me through two very different labours - it must be like a form of hypnobirthing! What's with the no cake though? (shock horror)

  6. Your bump is lovely! I just seem to be fat everywhere.lol.

Felt exactly the same as you though when reaching the final trimester as did not enjoy the first two so much.

Wheat and sugar free diet..really??We have to give up wine as is..do we really have to give up cakes and pasta too?? (Kinda realising why I'm fat everywhere.lol) May have to give that book a read though as am hoping for a water birth,if all goes to plan, so hypnobirthing tips are much needed :) xx

  7. The book is pretty full on and should really be started from late in the 1st trimester (so a fail for me there). I'm more 'cherry picking' the bits I want from it - yoga and relaxation mainly, which a lot of people have said they found the best route to managing labour, like Tanya :). I tried not eating cake and it resulted in an all mighty cake binge so that's kind of gone out the window now! I'd be interested to know what you think if you do read it Amy.

  8. Ooh yes that would be a major fail for me too..will have a look for it and give it a skim read to see what I can find useful. Have got a few visualisation exercises from the NCT antenatal classes have attended so possibly can add to those?xxx

  9. I didn't realise they did visualisation exercises at NCT, our course is not for another few weeks. That's good to know. I've just bought the Tara Lee yoga DVD (thanks for the recommendation Josie) and it has a 20 minute visualisation by the author of The Gentle Birth Method if you're interested? Who knew giving birth would be so expensive!

  10. Hope your course goes well :) I found the visualisation techniques really good but husband isn't quite convinced! Ooh that sounds good...shall have to have a look. Haven't managed to look at that book yet! Am wondering whether to or not now as am almost 38 weeks! And yes bank balance is taking a serious hit! Am in the process of packing hospital bag and there is so many things I've had to buy!xxx
